There's no realistic alternative being proposed by Trump or any others supposedly in the deglobalisation camp (plenty in the UK as well). It is all simplistic cod-1950s economic thinking, if we import less we'll build more. Hasn't worked like that for 40 years.

I think ultimately becoming mostly self sufficient is a noble aim in this current world, but shutting off the supply chain quickly would be extremely difficult and building national resilience would take a long time.

Explain to a Trumpite that tariffs are inflationary & that is exactly the response: "We'll make it ourselves". Completely ignores: a) time frame involved; meanwhile tariffed imports continue; b) US producers can then charge slightly less than imports, so still inflationary! They're clueless.

NB we can't properly model US tariff policy because of all the uncertainty. So imagine being a US company trying to justify a major investment. But that's what happens in places where the President is an incompetent surrounded by lackeys telling him he's a genius.
