If Trump fired Hegseth, he would have to admit that he made a mistake in nominating him. And Trump NEVER, EVER makes mistakes...in his own mind.

Yes, but Trump has fired numerous previous cabinet members. He just blames everything on their failings. Some more is going on here.

Oh, I'm not saying he won't fire him. Just that he'll do it in a way makes it look like Hegseth left of his own free will. To spend more time with his highball, perhaps.

If he hired him for a reason and that reason has not been fulfilled yet, then he (DT) could be weighing things for now. Republicans need to get this under control fast though if they can.

This seems right to me. He will drop anyone in a hot second if he thinks they are dragging him down. He has a plan for Hegseth. And if Hegseth also knows the plan, then that's leverage over Trump, too. Both could be keeping him in place.
