Playing Prince of Persia: Lost Crown and it is a solid metroidvania that does the franchise justice, though what jumps out at me is that this feels like the first time the IP is actually drawing from Persian mythology instead of just making stuff up

The background lore for the game feels somewhat perfunctory and dry, and is kind of overshadowed by the goofy squad shooter ensemble cast, but the use of the simurgh and azhdaha suggest much more interest in the culture the IP is named after than usual.
The goofy squad shooter ensemble is a reference to The Conference of the Birds (source: game director himself). Seven Immortals = the seven valleys or hurdles to overcome before reaching Simurgh
I do think it's cool to work that in. I just feel like the particular flavor of the presentation of these characters feels very modern and focus tested in a way I find distracting.
It’s a shame the game under performed commercially, since I appreciate the detail work that went into looping series motifs into more specific cultural touchstones and this feels like a positive direction for the franchise
