Well, that "fantasy version we're used to" was pretty much established by the original Jurassic Park. Prior depictions of dinosaurs were more lizard-like and lumbering, to an audience in 1994 the raptors genuinely WERE more agile, clever and birdlike in behavior than anything they'd previously seen.
