I liked The Dalles. Though my most vivid memory is of queueing up outside a coffee shop at 4am for what appeared to be the last remaining sets of eclipse-watching glasses available in the whole US Northwest.
Pretty close isn't how I would put it. Miles away seems to be more appropriate.

Lovely! This has been a perfect yardwork day here in SE PDX. Hit up a plant sale this a.m., brought our haul home, and just finished prepping the ground to do some planting tomorrow! 🌞🌿🪴🌻
I absolutely LOVE Oregon. I am from Canada - 2014 I drove to Oregon from Alberta on the Columbia River Highway.Stayed overnight in Portland on my way to Lincoln City. Drove home on Pacific Coast Hwy to Tacoma and home. One of the most beautiful trips ever. Hope I can get back again some day.
when I lived back East, a friend temporarily relocated there from a place with similar terrain in WA. I thought the declarations of claustrophobia-inducing limited vista in the East might be hyperbole until I came to see for myself.
Our family is in Rhododendron, just on the other side of where you are. It’s gorgeous and another month will have the most pleasant scents growing all around.
Do you see evidence of the Glacial Lake Missoula floods around there? It fascinates me. I wanted to visit the U.S.A. to follow the floods path...but that can wait at least four years.
See it everywhere, the valleys you see likely formed as flood waters receded, and along the Columbia scoured basalt ledges and biscuit scablands, the intrusions of basalt sticking up after looser soils washed away
Wow! That's incredible to this Australian. I so look forward to seeing it one day. I want to start at Missoula and follow the path all the way to Astoria. Dry falls just blows my mind. The amount of water needed to form that in a few days! Imagine the sound!
Congratulations! Love the Gorge! I had a place west of you for several years in Hood River & then later, across the river in White Salmon for a short period of time.
Beautiful country. My cousin and his friends used to go to the concerts at the Gorge of George. Grandpa had a vineyard and made his own wine. They would raid his cellar before they went. 😄🍷
