Overall rates of co-residence has shown an increase since 2005 when 10% of 25-34 year olds were living with their parents. In 2020 that figure increased to 14%.

But this trend is much more pronounced for lower-income young adults (left panel below).

For low-income young adults, co-residence rates increased from 11% in 2005 to over 21% in 2020. For high-income young adults, this increase was much more modest from 7% in 2005 to almost 9% in 2020.

Increases in parental co-residence were strongest in the larger cities and nearby municipalities (e.g. satellite towns). Furthermore, these spatial patterns are most pronounced for those on a lower income. This suggests an interaction between social and spatial inequalities

Multivariate modelling with 3-way interaction effects between socio-economic status, geography (a.o. distance to a large city) and cohort (2005 or 2020) confirms the interaction (plotted margins below). Simply put, we show that geography increasingly matters, especially for those on a low income

This paper is part of a longer collaborative research line with Rowan Arundel on increasing socio-spatial inequalities in housing. It is also part of Amber Howard's PhD research on young adult housing inequalities beyond generation rent.
