The paper evaluates the objection that political philosophers tend to adopt a "nation-state-centric way-of-seeing" that's bad for normative theorising. This objection was brought to philosophy from the social sciences by @spe07.bsky.social and @alexsager.bsky.social. (2/8)

I'm sympathetic with many of the objections these critics have made against particular nationalist/statist arguments. That said, the paper expresses scepticism about the prospects of successfully objecting to methodological nationalism as a general phenomenon. (3/8)

Specifically, I argue that methodological nationalism can be fruitfully understood as a "perspective" in Camp's sense. I claim that Camp's framework reveals that methodological nationalism is not the *kind* of thing that can be decisively objected to in a widely-persuasive manner. (4/8)

As such, I suggest that philosophers concerned with nation-state-centricity in political philosophy return to targeted critique of specific claims made in specific contexts. See e.g. @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social's excellent "states are not basic structures". (5/8)

Lastly, I suggest that those sympathetic with the objection to methodological nationalism might find it valuable to reinterpret it as a form of critique – one that highlights the dangers of nation-state-centric ways-of-seeing, but does not provide a knock-down argument against them. (6/8)
