Every new tax officer who was on enforcement would pay back their salary 100 fold - invest and close the loopholes and off shore havens - then see what your tax burden should be instead of what it currently is

It’s the absurd logic they apply to chasing tax - my accountants told me (after our letter saying as we were late with £32 - yes, THIRTY TWO QUID - they’d be keeping a close eye on us) that some other clients owe tens of thousands & are never chased for it 🤷‍♀️🤬

One of Westminster's issues with tax is that it has allowed a ridiculously complicated set of rules to evolve, making tax assessment difficult and expensive for everyone. I'm hopeful that Scotland will introduce simplification as part of independence - making evasion much easier to manage.

We were raised to believe that paying tax was a social obligation, a key way to build a fair society. It galls me that so many get away with tax evasion and 'clever' tax avoidance. We also need responsible people using the money wisely, which hasn't happened for a long time

Splitting definitions between 'avoidance' and 'evasion' has aided lucrative careers for a cohort of accountants and lawyers whose moral codes are less robust than most people's. If someone is convicted of abusing the tax system then their advisors should be held equally liable

That's where you get into realm of working the loopholes and grey areas thanks to an overly complex system that's always been added to, not simplified (as much as it can be). For me it's where the nuance is abused by those who are already wealthy but out of reach of the majority
