This series had a chance to tell a powerful story about patriarchal white religious nationalism and of its warts and just went with the whole "colorblind" society thing.

This is why I hated the casting even though I understood why they did it. Atwood’s original intent was to tell white women we aren’t special, everything we’ve done to marginalized women can & will be done to us. The book is implicit that it’s who’re supremacist patriarchy because they’re inseparable

That's the reason why I never watched the series--even though I loved the book. I felt that the showrunners were trying to sidestep the issue of how patriarchy and white supremacy bolster each other.
