Proactive use of the media. It worked to get people voting for whoever was most likely to defeat a Tory. It's a bit of an open door, but someone has to push it.

I think the problem with Tories has been the flooding of right wing extremists at local level, following the collapse of more traditional Tory party members. Faced with non-selection, too many MPs moved to the right.

Yes, I agree. I think she may have thought she was doing the right thing at some points. But the whole era is a watershed and now needs to be forensically examined to unpick what went wrong and how to repair it.

I do think Johnson, Gove, Farage and Cummings (and other lackeys) were more straightforwardly treacherous, and the thought of Gove sitting in the Lords is horrendous. The whole Brexit episode needs intense scrutiny, particularly the potential Russia and MAGA connections.

I was a bit younger than you at that time - I remember understanding that it was wrong from the principles perspective but didn’t have the maturity or experience to predict the trajectory. Thatcher and her cabinet most certainly should have done, though.
