I absolutely love when unions demand management give written explanations for their directives because most of the time managers are fully unprepared to actually explain themselves and will relent before giving a written explanation.

That's the whole 'information revolution' in a nutshell.
Computers challenged Managers to be Clear and Specific about what they wanted done by software, and Managers were forced to admit they had never had a clear idea themselves what all was involved in doing their jobs.

One surprising thing I discovered at my current job is that it's totally possible for management to defuse this approach by just not expecting people to work outside their obligations. (It is, obviously, a union shop.)

It is a strange enough thing that, from what I've seen, one standard part of training new hires is managers going around at the end of the day telling them to log out. "Yes I know but it's 4:30 so you have to go home now. Finish this tomorrow."

lol- a devilish aspect to it..saw both sides at UPS. Nothing like an hourly pulling out a detailed list of contractual duties and a steward spinning an hour of debate to make your day..on the other hand, nothing like watching a manager with steam coming out of their ears..while you work to rule😉
