It's a bit of both, mix of rigging and of over exaggerating your facial expressions.
Piloting a vtuber model is lot like being apuppeteer, but...with your face only instead of a hand.
You allow yourself to embrace the entropic nature of an uncaring oblivion to sap what remains of your identity until only you, the VTuber construct remains. 🙃
But yes, basically so!
At which, one way or another, identities shall meld and what is real and what is fiction blends and blurs.
