I think sonic mania is a great first pick as it sorta gets you familiar with how the classic sonic games play while being a really solid experience, then i would recommend sonic adventure for something 3D and generally more ‘story-focused’.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was my favorite classic game for the longest time. But as far as starting, I'm not sure. Mania's pretty great and more modern. Unleashed is fun, but only in the day stages. Generations is excellent, too.

Personal favorite is Heroes, but I seem to be alone there.

My personal favorite is Sonic 2, but perhaps Sonic Adventure or Sonic Mania. If you get Sonic Adventure look up how to set up the mod tools to fix all the bugs

I think either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Generations! Both are really smooth and satisfying.
