A lot of money was spent, which is what I keep saying - we're not a club that can buy flops like Benteke and Balotelli and stay competitive, like maybe City have (and even they haven't done it very often)

I agree 6th, 8th and 2 cup finals is 'BAD' - only by our new ridiculously high standards.

I'm happy either way. Mo and Virgil will have to be replaced soon anyway.

If we are to stay near the top, the club has to keep getting its transfer decisions correct. That's unavoidable, so this is a temporary squabble.

Remember being absolutely gutted and depressed Torres left for all of 2 weeks before Suarez started banging them in. We even won the Champions League after Owen left, We gotta buy well of course but the club’s bigger than any one individual.

One, it's much harder in this market to replace output (50 starts, 30 goals, 75% duel wins, whatever). We lose years trying to do that, as seen with Suarez, Gerrard, Owen.

These are players who can still maintain their levels for at least 2-3 years; so much evidence of 30+ yr olds having world class seasons nowadays, with advance of sports science.

Lastly, replacing those players is not only impossible (we never found like for like replacements for Gerrard, Suarez), it'd cost us so much more to even replicate their outputs with multiple players. We tried replacing Mane/Firmino like that, unsuccessfully.

The ideal solution is to have em around while we train their future replacements for a few years, while also giving ourselves best chance of success during that time.
That's how big clubs transition. We did it with Nunez and Firmino, Diaz and Mane.

Understand your point, but why even choose to let em go, disrespect em while we're chasing the big trophies? They're underpaid if you compare with other world class players. And it'd cost much more to get their current output, never mind their peak seasons. Esp given our transfer policies.
