In my (northeast state) town I had a guy running for local office walk up to me as I was building a fence and give me his pitch. Between his policy ideas and just the spirit of going around by foot talking to people I voted for him.

The day a candidate (in a crowded field) for city hall came to my door to ask directly for my support and vote and spoke to me about my concerns, I said to my wife “she’s doing the work on the campaign; she’ll do the work in office .” Got my vote. It matters. Best to you.

When I lived in a nicer neighborhood, local candidates would go door to door. I really appreciated the opportunity to talk with them face to face.

Not suggesting anyone do that now -- too dangerous.

I did local politics for years. Personally talking to people and listening to them is incredibly important. Phone banking, precinct walking, talking to community groups all really matter.
