well we all know how uncreative and safe playing people in charge of companies are, so they prefer to run an existing but established io that will give them some money over risking it all with a new idea
Wanna put this out there pretty sure the Moana 2 movie was supposed to be a mini series on Disney + and they did a last second overhaul that didn't quite pay off especially animation wise
Every time my 10 yr old sees a “perfect movie” she asks when the “next one” comes out… kids have an endless thirst for good story telling, when I was a kid my grandparents had time to tell me stories at bedtime… now kids watch gamepads until they fall asleep while my wife and I are still working
Imagine if someone tried to make a sequel to Highlander!
(In the end, there can be only one.)

that said, if you don't understand the motives of the studio, research "late stage capitalism".
To make some money. Why would they risk money n reputation, creating new movie with new characters n plots when they can take already successfully proven heroes and plot as a basis for a new movie. It works like 'A sequel to Moana? Such a good cartoon! It will definitely not disappoint!' n u pay
N u pay for a ticket. Millions of people will pay for tickets. In fact, it's a W situation. The same with "Shrek' or 'Toy Story" as examples. These movies didnt lose their popularity or money, but on the contrary raised. Although, they could easily end with the one movie.
because in a post-capitalist society we need to wring out every remotely popular ip for even a morsel of income, lest we allow a good thing to simply be a good thing. and god forbid we do the unthinkable— create something new

I still crank “You’re Welcome” and belt it out when I’m driving home from work haha.

Sure, sequels are rarely as good as the original, but if the creators and writers can afford making one, why not?
Franchise potential
Money
Greed
Money
Trilogy
Prequels
Oh how the list goes on 😒
