The Diary is so good all the court diaries are amazing, very personal and wonderful reads. Pillow book is like note book by Murasaki's court rival and its full of open wit while the Diary is very keen on court life.

Half the fun of it is the translation notes scrambling to try to figure out who the tea is about. Everyone is only addressed by use-name (why she’s called “Lady Purple”)
There’s also so much layering to court culture and clothing my edition even had a list of seasonal colors and plants for that year

I was supposed to have read Norwegian Wood for a class in college, but that semester I’d just come out to myself and was mainly focusing on that… didn’t do a lot of my reading. Should I catch up on it?

It’s not a bad book, but I don’t think it’s my favorite either. There’s a couple scenes I really enjoyed. It’s a slower kind a book. If you’re curious enough about, I’d say check it out.
