Heads up for crafters: Great American LLC has won the bid for Joann. They’re a liquidator, so ALL Joann stores will be closed by end of May. Stock up on everything NOW and if you have an independent fabric store near you, start using it 😢

Yeah, I'm pro indie store all the way, BUT: that doesn't exist in many places, and where it does it tends to be primarily quilting. There are very few independent craft suppliers these days.

We have a place called Crafting for Good that sells donated craft supplies, and they often have fabric. But if all Joann’s close they probably won’t have that anymore either. 😞

We also have a place that specializes in upholstery but $$$, and apparently a sewing machine shop that also sells various fabrics, but I guarantee they won’t have the selection or prices Joann’s did.

Yeah, there is nothing comparable, really, there simply isn't. (We do not speak of Hobby Lobby, which still wouldn't be the same.) Even when Hancock was around, or if you live near a garment district.

Hobby Lobby does not exist in the little universe inside my brain (there are two of them locally but NOOOPE). We never had a Hancock but I’ve heard them spoken of in the deep lore… (when I used to work at Joann’s). 😂

Yeah the closing store discounts aren’t that cost effective YET. As they get closer to closure and the fabrics might hit 40% off, THEN it’s worth it? But the manager at my (surviving) store said they’re not inheriting any stock from closing stores. Weird.

I do wonder what they'll do with stock (beyond me panic buying most of it, hah). I work with so many different kinds of materials, I keep melting down on how to stock up, and I've already hit issues finding my "staples." It's sad and bad for so many reasons.

Yeah the staples are going fast, from what I’ve seen. Guterman black & white thread, neutral bias tapes & zippers, interfacing… everyone’s waiting for the fabrics to drop to 40% off, I reckon.

Yep, our thread and bias tape were hit hard early. Folks are definitely waiting on cottons. I mainly make plush, so I'm too anxious about some fabrics, like fleece, to wait. But I also use vinyl rolls, beads, buttons, yarn, trims... and you've reminded me to get interfacing!

I cleaned out one store of their gunmetal eyelets & boning and I managed to snag packs of black bias. My beloved sf101 interfacing was all gone so I have 2 bolts arriving from Amazon tomorrow.

The manager at my store told me months ago that they were getting shipments for stores in other states and not theirs, and couldn't reach a live human to sort it out. When they DID get restocks, they didn't have enough staff to unpack and shelve them.
