I was never a fan of Merkel, but here they are simply trying to find someone to blame. Germany had no leverage whatsoever to force Ukraine to sign. Let's not forget that the UK and the USA are the protecting powers of Ukraine (nuclear weapons treaty), so they should have intervened back then.

No. That was the general opinion in Germany, only the Greens (with whom I work) have positioned themselves against NS2. German politicians were afraid that the pipelines through Ukraine and Poland were too unsafe.

True, but Merkel had the power to make decisions that mitigated risks. Nord Stream 2 deepened ties with Russia despite warnings from Ukraine and Poland.
