I can understand their reasoning, I mean if I were in Canada I’d be pretty pissed at the US too. And boycotting is an individual way that would make a difference. I just think being a little more choosy is better than putting us all under one big umbrella.

The issue is not us wanting to boycott USA artists; it's the Loonie value against USD.

We're already seeing a 30% conversion cost ON A GOOD DAY.
This means that your price will go from at least 130% to 150+%. Because our CAD will lose against the USD with this trade war.

The reality is that Canadian and American cost of living will drastically increase. And the advantage you guys have over us is that your country has the reserve currency - we don't.

On the other hand, that 100$CAD commission will become 50$USD. Which would normally be close to 80$USD.
Canadian artists will become A STEAL from the USA. Because our dollar will be weak.

Worry less about Canadians not supporting you, but US clients looking at Canada for awesome art for cheap. x_x

And any major business that is housed in the US that has explicitly been helpful to the new administration.

Then spend that money in your local community and on artists instead.

I use DuckDuckGo/safari for my searches
Amazon is practically pointless to me after the Christmas season
Meta’s algorithm sucks so I don’t use IG, FB, or threads

I've been going pretty good with getting rid of a lot of those services, though I'm still working on scraping Google out of my phone. Do you know any decent alternatives to Starlink? I don't have much of a choice but to use satellite where I am but for obvious reasons I would rather not be with them

I don’t have experience with satellite internet, but I do know Viasat exists. It may be worth looking in to. No one directly owns Viasat, and their co-owner Nordic Entertainment Group doesn’t have clear ethics issues. Also the OpenSecrets profile doesn’t look too bad.

Amazon -> Try buying direct from manufacturers, or using your search engine’s Shopping tool if they have one.
Twitter -> Bluesky. If you have people who won’t/can’t leave, Nitter let’s you browse Twitter with no ads/tracking/account
Tesla -> Many other EV brands.

Also to point out, this just covers consumer products. I think it’s unrealistic to expect a full boycott as most of the internet is AWS/Google powered. But personally I think switching where you can rather than doing nothing still helps, even if the individual impact is small.

This is a good question! I basically already do it, but I also have been migrating away for a bit. And tbh it doesn't have to be entirely perfect, but a significant public reduction in use is gunna hurt the tech giants. Imo Amazon is the easiest, their usefulness is mostly an illusion.

I personally def still fall down on YouTube with google, but beyond that I am almost 100% out of their ecosystem otherwise. We don't necessarily need to be perfect but I think even a broad reduction in use would be an effective strat.

Ah yeah I keep spacing AWS. Still, I do know people who have migrated their businesses off AWS, and a Prime boycott would be far from trivial and is still worth doing. It's hard to do perfect avoidance, at least for everyday consumers, but we can certainly curtail our engagement in a meaningful way

There's a tool out there that stops you from loading anything from Google or Amazon and the entire web becomes unusable.

it is functionally impossible to boycott them. Even physical stores will use Google or Amazon services to run their servers. They're unavoidable unless you live as a hermit.

I understand the sentiment, and believe me, I wish it were different. But, it's not about boycotts, I won't be able to afford commissions at this rate if the Canadian dollar drops lower than it is now.
