I think this is where the series peaked for me. A lot of people at my school at the time loved Saints Row 2, but I couldn't get into it. I had a great time with the 3rd game though & then the 4th became a bit too much for me. SR3 was the perfect blend of the silly & fun
I wasn't even really playing GTA games at the time honestly. I had played GTA4, but that's it. So didn't really compare it. Yet, just didn't click for me sadly. But oh well.
I played some San Andreas at a friend's house a couple times, but that's it. And even then, just mucking around, never story
GTA4 was my first GTA game, then GTA5 once it came to PS4. Started playing GTA3 couple years ago on PS4, but controls awful. Then definitive edition, but never finished

1 and 2, a lot of people like the more serious ones, but I just didn't enjoy my time with them that much.
I feel like 1 & 2 maybe didn't do so well because people already had GTA well established as the game for that kinda stuff
Probably better for you not to have that comparison there to be fair!
