The creative brief was something like “Dantes Inferno meets Giger and Beksinski”. I threw some Hell Raiser in there too with the black Phyrexians. It was a super fun set to be a part of.

That brief is why I love Phyrexian stuff its this weird mix that can push things but still come back around to this odd religious feeling that you can see why someone would worship those things but alien fear is still there.

Oh wow, the birds add so much to the sense of scale. While Manzanedo's artwork is by no means "bad", this concept captures so much of the character that I felt was missing in the released card.

Thanks for the kind words! The art director for the set wanted to give me a crack at some of the card art for the bigger phyrexians I designed. Was occupied at the time and had to pass or I’d have tried my hand at some final card art. I liked how a lot of the concepts were handled by other artists.
