Even if you are paying the full amount for care in nursing care facilities, the lack of adequate staffing is appalling. Turnover adds to it. In a nice but not luxury facility 6 yrs ago, my mother was paying almost $12K a month. Can’t imagine what is considered affordable now.

I live in rural Minnesota; the nursing home costs $17,000-$20,000/month. The memory unit my dad was in was $11,500/month, Mom’s memory unit is $9,000/month; Thank goodness they had a home to sell and long term care insurance since both were private pay.

Yes. I do have a home for some financial backup. Couldn’t get the long term care from private insurance because of prior disability. Have the VA for a “resource” for whatever that will be worth. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Hoping to die peacefully in my sleep at home. Life is hard, even with financial backstops. God bless. 🙏🏻

Parents got into the LTC insurance when it was relatively knew. The coverage has been amazing, but cannot imagine it is so good anymore.

No, it really isn't. My parents bought a policy that had unlimited benefit time. It only covered about $3000/mo. once she was in nursing home. Nothing to sneeze at, but only about 25% of what was needed.

Had a friend paying $14,000 for her Dad in DC area two years ago. She brought him to Atlanta and cut the cost by half, but she had to take him to Dr appointments, do his laundry, bring him extra fluids to ensure he was staying hydrated, buying Ensure etc etc. So he mostly got a small room,

I have lived it with two friends. To lie in your own filth is an undeserved degradation of a life well lived. And as much as they would like, families cannot be constantly vigilant due to other obligations. But they should be able to trust in taxes paid to be repaid to them in time of need.
