Resources can be anything from getting cool idea from shows and books, to running a pre built module. Also, pick up some one shots for side quests to come up with time to figure stuff out in you own main story and take a break. Also, ignore rules to favor fun, rule are a guide, not set in stone.

i'd say that aside from having experience playing d&d games to know what kind of shenanigans are possible, 80% of it is based on what kind of adventure your players want to have, and what kind of story you want to tell! :3 i've gotten tons of different tips from youtube vids on dm'ing tho!

I did my first run eith my oldest and his buddies. Definitely read the dnd guide and watch a few YouTubes. But play a beginner adventure first and figure it out. Just started our real one after 4 sessions with beginner. I love it!

DM'ing for a little over a decade. Best advice is to keep homebrew to a minimum until you've got a feel for the power balance of the table. With that said, a fun homebrew resource is the The Net Libram d10,000 table of Random Magical Effects.

The key is to be a great story teller, very descriptive, but the intonation in your voice sets the mood and tone for the game. Times of action are felt with how you narrate, but this is also where you have to really understand the game mechanics cause there is a lot of dice throwing

Play a pre-made story like Lost Mine of Phandelver or a simpler one, read ahead a bit and make notes on what you think are the most important bits you'll need to reference. Also watch some people on YouTube play

Robin Laws' "Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering" was an important early text for me as a DM; not sure how hard it might be to find these days. His basic point: If you and your players are enjoying the game, you are playing the game correctly and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

I recommend checking out https://www.dmsguild.com for free premades! This was such a great resource for when I was starting out, lots of free starters.

That said, the 5e starter kit is also really good for beginners. If no one in your group has run it, it'll be a good story and walk you through DMing

Talk to other DMs as much as you can. Experience is very important for doing it well and you can easily get a lot fun people who already have it, plus it'll work fun connections as every campaign is different so you'll have stuff to share with them as well!

Mostly just take your time with it. A good table will give you grace and if it starts to take too long to figure it out, make an executive decision and read up between games
