Sure some farmers are wealthy but many whilst asset rich struggle on low incomes.

So if a person is asset rich but struggling on a very low income, should they not sell some of their assets, boost their income and reduce said struggle?

Of course that is an option that is open however this is part of the problem.
It’s obviously complicated, but from the point of view of a livestock farmer, selling small parcels of land year on year to supplement income the result is lower and lower income necessitating the sale of more land.

I'm not a farmer and genuinely asking the question in order to understand, are there huge amounts of livestock farmers whose farm/land is worth >£3m whilst they work for little to no money?

There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about the new IHT. I think farmers feel threatened. The industrialisation/intensification of farming is well underway with demand for cheap food since 1945.
Farming conglomerates (US style) are just round the corner.

It’s a fair question. I grew up on a hill/marginal farm in the Yorkshire Dales but never knew how much money the farm made.
I know my Dad worked 6 1/2 days a week (approximately 70 hours) and took a week off to go on a family holiday to Blackpool and got happier as the week went on 😀

Actually he didn’t really take a week off. He drove home 45 miles to milk cows, slept at home, milked the following morning and then drove over to spend the day with us. Not much of a break really 😀

Totally appreciate the work ethic and do not doubt that run of the mill farmers work really hard. But lots of non-farmers also work extremely hard and contribute by paying their fair share of taxes. It doesn't seem fair that one section of the population should be exempt - just because.
