animating with less drawings is soo hard. Doing 1s takes more time but in 3s or 4s mistakes are less forgivable since your brain has more time to process each drawing. That also allows for more creative movements, you'll never see a broken arc on disney, but limited animation is filled with them

Our brains don't process visuals the same way tvs, monitors, & computers do. We regularly interpret visual input that's missing data & fill in the blanks. That's why we can identify images we only see for a fraction of a second. Video doesn't need to be "smooth" for us to perceive the motion.

Yeah I understand that motion works fine enough with lower fps, but what stylistic/artistic reasons would make you want to prefer using the lower fps option? Every “this is why lower fps is better” post I’ve seen is always just comparing the same scene to a shitty ai interpolation, which ofc is bad

for me, a good example is old, 6-fps anime (specifically thinking of gundam 0079). every frame hangs longer on screen, coming across as a series of compositions instead a single moving image. the effect is more like a motion comic than a drawn film, but on those terms it looks and feels great.

It's always good to highlight the amazing animators that put their everything into their work, but understand that that isn't always demonstrated as high-framerate 360 shots. We praised Into the Spiderverse for blending multiple animation styles. Including low framerate shots!

We need to value how animation is a part of storytelling, not just when it's unlike anything we've ever seen, and not just when it's highlighted by other people. Art is subjective, yes, but what is effective for telling a story changes from project to project. Different =/= Bad.

There's a part of me that loves offmodels and wacky cartoony shots that might not be the most refined but which make something animated feel like a cartoon in every sense (in the best way possible). Also sometimes lower fps animation can feel even faster when done well which works for some things.

I LOVE smear frames and in-between! They can look goofy & funny as individual frames, but seeing what animators did to make a shot feel fluid & give it its own character is incredible! I'm often mindboggled how they came up with those off frame shots because how does your brain make that image!?

WoW had a couple of sets of animation using very limited motion and beautiful painting to excellent storytelling effect. They were character sidebars loosely integrated into gameplay.

Exactly! Interpolating 24 or 30 fps content to 60+plus looks awful! Honestly I kinda blame motion settings/soap opera effect being a default setting on most tvs as a cause. Then they wonder why thier show artifacts like crazy on playback. Those settings have thier place but animation isn't one of em

I learned during uni animation classes about the artistic choice to have Miles animated in 2s when web swinging in the first spiderverse film until he learns how to do it properly from Peter, incredible use of limiting the frames and it worked so well.
