Addendum for stuff like the lost media wiki: real life events that were possibly recorded and never publicly broadcast or distributed are not lost media either. Armin Meiwes recording two hours of him dismembering a man is not lost media just because you can't see it.

To be lost media it has to be media, for one, and it has to be lost. It's right there in the name. Outtakes from tv shows, recordings of events and so on that aren't even confirmed to exist aren't lost media either! These most charitably could be called unconfirmed media.

is that necessarily true? it's pretty common for arcade games to fail a location test (it was publicly available in a conventional arcade) and then not go on to be sold.

I think that would fall under "released to the public" to some extent. But even then it's not truly lost until someone can prove the board and roms don't exist

The phrase "Restricted Media" comes to mind.

I.e., Lost Media is known but no longer accessible. Restricted Media is known and hypothetically accessible but circumstances partially or fully impede doing so.

We've gotta strike old commercials and bumpers from these things entirely. They're designed to be disposable and air for short periods of time. Preservation has never been a part of the process. You're lucky if they remain saved in portfolios of the people who worked on them.
