Not that that's the important point of the story, but even well-meaning young people just seem to reboot when you ask them a question they don't know the answer to.

I'm tempted to call it a lack of curiosity, but I don't think that's right. I wonder if they think it's rude to just say "I don't know, but let me do some searching/googling to learn the answer."

On the other side, there's what I call the "six degrees of adhd" problem where you lose track of intermediate steps. I used to get in trouble in math class bc I couldn't show my work sometimes. The teacher would ask how I got an answer and all I could do was shrug and say "idk my brain just did it"

Yeah that's a good point. Even if it's something they've done, they've already moved on to the next seven things and they're struggling thinking back
