Interested. What basic goods do you see being disrupted? I thought the US was at least self-sufficient food-wise, and clothing? Housing materials? I know pharmaceuticals are heftily manufactured in China but what else?

No, the US is not self-sufficient in either food or clothing. We have basically no industries that aren’t heavily dependent on imports, for the actual products, for the raw materials to make them, or the machines and machine parts needed to keep our domestic factories and processing open.
We grow enough food to feed ourselves if you don’t care about eating fruit or vegetables, or about whether your food has flavor, and if almost everyone gives up coffee. But we can’t process what we grow into edible foodstuffs purely domestically, much less satisfy actual consumer demand.
Thanks for the info. Long term some of this could be remedied - eg in varying what you grow and reopening factories? You seem to have most climates and are famous for can-do?
Appliances, toys, small electronics, dishes, some clothing & shoes come from China. I think most of the clothing in the US is imported from Southeast Asia (lots of shirts from Vietnam in my wardrobe). A lot of building materials come from Canada & Mexico.
