Totally agree. You can’t be pro migrant only on one side of the border. Applauding the increased militarisation of an already hyper militarised border in a country with a very bad track record on migrants’ human rights is… odd… for progressives.

Nailed it. It normalizes the discourse that we need "strong borders," and that immigrants are a threat. It also scapegoats Canada and Mexico as "abusing" the US. Canada in particular is a target, as our very existence as a social democracy exposes the lies of fascist ideology. It's not over.

And the Canadian stuff wasn't already in place. They scrambled to spend a bunch of taxpayer dollars on security nobody needs or wants in anticipation of the tariff threat.

great point. i think it's easy to see how canada's choice to implement things it was already doing a "win," but the effect it has is still damaging. canada still has no legal limit on the duration of immigration detention, for instance.

And also Canada was already doing it (the Dec 2024 border plan), in part, in anticipation of Trump threats in lead up to inauguration. And the libs basically catering to PP & rise of far right politics on border & anti migrant racist bs ("cause" of housing, jobs, wages, cost of living crisis.
