I think the intense opposite - most people I know that like twin peaks, utena, etc, stuff heavy with obfuscation, are pretty disappointed by the weak effort of penguindrum to culminate into anything coherent the way these other shows do. They're devastating, focused and intentional in comparison
I stand what I said by before: you will need a break from this type of storytelling, find a pallet cleanser! But for real I don't think this show is it. Sorry you can't get your time back, and if I could have stopped you and pointed you in a better direction I would have lol
it's so okay, i knew why i (re)started it and figured out relatively quickly i wasn't going to like it but persevered anyway - nobody could save me but it wasn't much of a price to pay for curiosity (i'm covid-sick and am doing nothing else anyway lol)
I think utena still may need an open mind to not bounce off (especially with covid brain lmao) of due to having to painstakingly explain its own language to the viewer but... Conviction and intention and direction in storytelling is so sexy. And it knows exactly what it wants to say.
Tldr; The narrative styles of the aforementioned titles feel pointless if they're telling ultimately nihilistic & cynical stories. You can dress them up, but if it's just a distraction (including "everything is good & will carry on", thus nothing matters) then uhh yep your themes are gone, poof!
(It is hard for me to explain how e.g. twin peaks handles this without just giving up on itself in posts as I am out of practise & also unwell atm but I implore you to convince yourself unfortunately you saw a disappointing show and it's not reflective of other works it is often compared to lol)
