The only real westerns in which R Scott played a realistic westerner was those by Boetticher. And hé produced Mist of thème. To his crédit. Far from the caricatures he played before.
While the Boetticher films are in a class by themselves, Scott was great in many fine Westerns before then. Films like The Bounty Hunter & Coroner Creek (& more) already have Scott portraying violent, cynical, wrathful characters.

I'm still finding gems in Scott's filmography. He'd already appeared in some pretty mean roles, so he slipped into the Ranown cycle very easily, though Boetticher & Burt Kennedy really refined his persona. I think their big step forward in the genre was their characterization of the villains
