Vietnam immediately came to mind. I've been to Panama, and it's a sweltering, mosquito-ridden jungle! I guess no one has read the tragic history of the thousands of lost lives during the canal's construction.

Exactly. I would imagine a scenario where the Panamanians decide that if they can't have, & benefit from their own canal, then no-one can, & the US finds itself stuck in shits creek.

Even aside from something as dramatic as them bombing the canal, the only people who actually know how to operate it (efficiently) work for the Panama Canal authority and there’s a million ways they could shut down operations.

Best case, Trump might control a canal with 1/3 of its current capacity.

One ship, that just ran aground and got stuck in 2021, closed the canal for 6 days, costing billions in stranded trade. It would not take a great deal of planning to scuttle multiple ships simultaneously all along the canal. It would would be blocked for a very long time.

But that’s even assuming active sabotage. Before that level is just the reality that, without the current human staff who operate it, the canal is going to operate at a massively reduced capacity for years, until some new staff learns how.

The whole idea is just stupid.

Also wouldn't it be in the interests of several nations to just blockade both ends from American ships? Are we just gonna open fire on anybody?
