Necrons were my first army when I started playing 40k, so they're very special to me. I've had two armies over the years. My first was bone with red shoulders, my second was Bioshock themed, bronze with stippled green armour. This time I wanted to do something different.

My first idea was galaxy themed Necrons. I wanted bright gold armour and neon pink energy with galaxy cloaks. In my head it looked amazing, but the cloak and the energy just didn't come out like I wanted. It doesn't look bad, it still needs work, but I just wasn't feeling it.

I often hear people say they don’t want to start a model because they’re worried they might ruin it. And I hate that. Models can always be improved, painted over, or stripped and started again. A point of failure is disheartening, but we can always try again.

Ngl this is a huge reason why I haven't built my Guilliman or Abaddon yet. Their models are so freaking iconic and given my skills, I don't want them to end up looking crappy.

Imotekh is my second favourite Necron character (after the incomparable Zahndrekh and Obyron who take joint first), and I adore this new model, so I was definitely gutted. But I put him to one side and tried again.

I still liked the bright gold, so I wondered whether an ancient Egyptian theme would work. It’s something I’ve always wanted to try with Necrons, and I’ve had a lot of practice painting blue and yellow with gold for my Thousand Sons. Enter Orikan.

I love this model, but at first I was a bit intimidated by all the detail. He was surprisingly wonderful to paint. All the little bits move out of the way for a brush and I don’t think there was anywhere I couldn’t get to. I still didn’t like my paint scheme though…
