feel for you, big time. Liberals have pulled the biggest lever on this by pulling back on immigration both temp and perm, so hopefully that helps you out on the job front and housing front, agree that $250 to people is wasteful, offensive pandering.
Fair enough. But adopting a policy to address food inflation is not mutually exclusive of other policies to address housing availability/affordability.
Food insecurity has been directly linked with the lack of housing affordability. A one time cheque for $250 that leaves out the most vulnerable is not going to solve anything
Food insecurity + housing precarity are both related to poverty. A cheque for $250 may not solve the housing crisis but it provides some financial relief. It’s not intended to solve the housing crisis. Also: retired seniors are not getting the $250.00.
No one policy is going to solve everything all at once. Your arguments are reductionist and ultimately self-defeating. I agree that the GST holiday should include more people - eg seniors and disabled people. That doesn’t mean no policy can be adopted that doesn’t only meet all of your needs.
Seniors are traditionally the group who most struggle financially. The fact that younger people are also struggling does not mean that all seniors are living the good life. Do some research.
I'm perfectly fine that they aren't! Go look at the poverty rates I provided. CPP, OAS, GIS, defined benefit pensions. By every measure, seniors are doing better than on the basis of empirical info we have.
