The @cityofvancouver.bsky.social says it prioritizes pedestrians, but recent changes at Kingsway & Dumfries and Adanac & Commercial tell a different story. These projects make walking less safe and convenient—at a cost. A thread. 🧵 1/

Hey I'm sending multiple emails today about poorly handled construction zones. Does 311 actually work for anybody? In one case at least I found the email of a community liaison, maybe that'll get me somewhere?
ok well the liaison forwarded my email to a subcommittee, so maybe by June or so there will be a draft report that could be referred to the another subcommittee
🚶♀️ Kingsway & Dumfries: What was once a perpendicular pedestrian crossing is now a longer diagonal one, increasing crossing distance from ~22m to ~27m. The curb bumpout at the northeast corner is also gone, making the Dumfries crossing longer too. (📸 See before/after images.) 2/
City of Vancouver should also have built a protected active transportation lane when they rebuilt the sidewalk at that development. Ideally by reallocating a lane of traffic which would make it safer for people walking and driving as well. Burnaby is doing this. Vancouver should too.
The new alignment has also made it far too easy for drivers to ignore the No Right on Red sign at that intersection. We know that Right on Red is dangerous for pedestrians. So why did the City spend money to make walking more dangerous, instead of fixing areas that actually need safety upgrades? 3/
🚦 Adanac & Commercial: The City installed beg buttons for pedestrians, at an intersection where right now, the walk sign comes on automatically whenever the light is green. This likely means:
❌ Fewer chances to cross
⏳ Longer waits if you miss the button
🚗 Prioritizing cars over people! 4/
Neither of these intersections was broken, yet the City spent money to make them worse for pedestrians. If Vancouver is serious about Vision Zero, why are we seeing decisions like this? We're reaching out to the City for an explanation. Stay tuned. If you're concerned too, speak up! 5/
