What really happened to your jobs.

Back then, big computer systems were fairly new. When I got out of college and started working for the first big private company, I was employed with a team of people trying to build a system to manage the building materials group of a good size forest products company.

The team was massive, about 20 programmers, 15 analysts, several managers. This was just for single group within the company. Why would a company invest so much money in a computer system? Economics of course.

Just like people feel the need to “keep up” with the neighbors, companies feel the need to compete – ie., keep costs down. This new system may take a lot of people to create, but after it’s finished, it will automate a lot of the tasks that people were doing.

You might want to blame someone – me – people like me – but at the end of the day, we were just eager kids looking to prove ourselves. The real culprit wasn’t even the executives. They were in a brutal competition as well, trying to keep their costs lower than their competitors.

The real culprit – is specialization. The constant drive of humans to become more efficient at some task that makes them money.

However, what is the macro effect of all this specialization? I’m sure you’ve heard it’s a good thing – people will have more time to do better stuff. More free time. Well, sure, but the world is still ruled by supply and demand. The supply of eager kids is ever increasing.
