The podcast “Ultra,” by @maddow.msnbc.com, covers the Nazi efforts to use US Congress members to further their fascist ideals. This feels like the same sort of campaign in reverse.
If they can rally the right wingm European dissidents to fight their own governments, it will distract them from what Trump has planned next: suspending democratic process in the US. It is not dissimilar to the tactics used by the communists during the cold war.
My guess is it is to weaken Europe. A weak Europe will make USA relatively stronger in the world. That, and he is a right wing idiot who has no idea of what is going on in Europe. Completely caught up in his own propaganda and believing his own lies.
I do not entirely agree. Trump tried to weaken Europe and EU in hist first term by actively encouraging Brexit. He likely sees EU as a competitor, so it is in his interest to weaken Europe as a competitor. However, I do agree Donald Trump and his henchmen are not big fans of liberal democracy.

The idea is not so much to weaken Europe, but to weaken liberal democracies, which happen to be stronger in Europe than anywhere else.
