Honestly the more I think about it, the more i loathe the idea that educators “don’t let people/students come to their own conclusions.” Motherfucker I cannot PREVENT people from making their own conclusions even if I WANTED to. It’s the one thing literally anyone can be reliably counted on to do!

Education isn’t “here are inviolate facts; memorize them to become Learned,” for fuck’s sake. Even in the hard sciences, it’s “here’s an understanding of these models for reality so you can have a demonstrably proven lens for doing or thinking about [x]”

Sometimes I think the most valuable skill I learned as a kid was learning to sit with uncertainty.

One of my primary school teachers showed us how it is impossible to learn *everything* about *anything* by getting us to do a deep dive on a topic we were passionate about, we had a whole week!

Then she helped us learn something ELSE about the topic afterwards.

But I run into a lot of people (especially in my analyst role) who just want to know The Answer and... there very rarely is one. It's all about where you want to stop asking questions.

“The Answer” roughly = “a rule I can unthinkingly follow, and if I’m wrong somehow, I can be punishment-free! I was just following the Answer/Rule.”
