FWIW, the 'mid' in 'miwife' is from Old English "with" ("not "middle") and 'wife' from Old English 'wif' or woman. So 'the midwife' means "the with-woman", that is, the woman who is with the woman giving birth. Incredible and awesome women with women, doing their thing!
