I spend a significant amount of time driving to and from this particular horse rescue but I like it because I'm being helpful and I'm being active but I'm not being micromanaged. So it doesn't even feel so much like volunteering as just tending to my own barn and horses.
Today I walked the 35 year old therapy horse for a while for exercise and then cleaned and reorganized the tack shed. Next week the (cute) trainer will watch me ride one of the easy horses to assess my skill levels and then I can start riding the horses independently to exercise them too.
It's the best distraction from social media scrolling and whatever is happening in the world. Considering how much I consume and the stress and hustle of my job, it's become one of my healthiest hobbies outside of taking the dog on nature walks.
