It was a quite a shock at the time. Looking around the room I could see a few others were just as surprised as I was. These types of talks are important, the earlier people hear these types of things in their careers the better

I walked away pretty despondent but it also motivated me to put a plan together for my career and to figure out the sort of skills I needed to learn and to consider back up careers if academia didn’t work out
I also encountered these in the mid 90s and adjusted course. Then was very surprised to see a few people make post PhD media careers out of whining 15 years later. “Why didn’t anyone tell us I couldn’t get an academic job?!?”
Often the true nature of PI-level academia is not disclosed to aspiring researchers, but something that needs to be figured out as you go along. If you as a young researcher do not have access to a mentor, this is problematic to say the least...
