There is no necessary value judgement behind the word populist, and no moral equivalence necessarily drawn when it is applied to opposite political ideologies and parties.

Sorry, have you missed an entire decade of discourse? The word populist is almost exclusively used by the centre to perjoratively describe any critique of their technocratic settlement. The fact the left and right critiques are qualitatively worlds apart gets elided. Hence the push back.

I have studied political science and ideologies long enough to know that populism is a term that has multiple acceptions that are not all pejorative.

Great! Me too! Now why dont you look at how it's used in the anglo-media sphere, especially post-2008, to shape public opinion and deligitimise left wing policy responses, and get back to me. Book learning is only useful if you choose to apply it in the world as we find it.

So we are legitimate to ask how you define it in this context right? Because it could be negative or positive. And, we, on the left, are used to only hearing this negatively about us.

Let's not forget that it often compares the far left and the far right when we are radically different
