COBOL is a coding language. You may be more familiar with HTML which is another coding language. Just like English or Mandarin etc. have their own rules so do coding languages. You cannot speak Mandarin just because you can speak English. If they understood COBOL, they’d realize 150 was a default #.

Essentially, they do not have basic knowledge of the way the information is organized or why. Like 100 degrees Celsius is boiling but in Fahrenheit it would be 212 degrees. Body temp in Fahrenheit would sound incredibly high if you only knew degrees Celsius. (These are simplified examples.)

Someone whose Date of Birth wasn't recorded in the system, for whatever reason, so it was a 0 and that 0 was interpreted as "born in 1875" because that's how COBOL works.

There isn’t one. If the birthdate is unknown the system defaults to 1875 per the rules of COBOL. So folks seem older than they are.
