One of the big reasons things are so fucked up in the US right now is that so many people refuse to take a stand against bigotry and hate mongers because it might lose them status or income.

Another factor: a president who seems okay with political violence against his "enemies." Some folks are genuinely afraid of what his supporters might do. Have you seen POTUS condemn violent attacks on Democrats? Far from it. That too has had a chilling effect, as it was designed to.
At my work talking anything about politics or current events is highly discouraged and everything is business as normal. I start second-guessing myself thinking that I'm overreacting and too anxious and then I go to a protest and feel vindicated. But that feeling only lasts until the next work week.
This was on full display where I work right after the George Floyd murder. Managers started having "courageous conversations" about racial justice but nobody did a damn thing. I suggested letting the Black employees lead the sessions so we could do some meaningful work and I was quickly shut down.
