So I just got a notice from management that the shortage of IV fluids following damage to a factory in NC caused by Helene is worsening, and is now starting to constrain the care we are able to provide critically ill patients.

i've heard this as well. i'm a type I diabetic with a bunch of severe comorbs. if i get to the point where i can't keep down oral fluids and need to go in for an IV, this could kill me.
Just to be a bit more clear - we're still doing ok. Everyone who comes in is still going to get high quality care. We are just having to make substitutions and wiser resource usage. But if (IF) it continues, it won't be long before things tighten further. Then things will get interesting.
Also just saw that there's now a man in icu somewhere in North America with bird flu. This would be a really bad time for a new pandemic to break out. I hope it's nothing, but interesting to note the way crises will interact and amplify as our climate and political systems continue to degrade.
If things get really dire there's also instructions in it on how to make saline equivalent using soy sauce, most hospital cafaterias should have some and the hospital can order more for relatively cheap. Obviously keep allergies and other factors in mind before administering it.
