Seemingly race neutral concerns about "merit" have long been the go-to justification for segregationists hoping to hide their real goals. Here I use the example of standardized tests implemented to avoid complying with Brown v. Board.

Contemporary concerns about "merit" that only ever seem to apply to people of color (not, say, Hegseth or legacy admits) are a thin screen for segregationist intent.
Even though they have gained a lot of ground, I still think the segregationist movement is deeply unpopular and that's why they cover their tracks by claiming they are "anti-DEI" instead of the more honest "pro-segregation."
