I've heard them all mock him over the last two seasons and are now rowing back 😄 I've been clear from the start regarding Beto, I'll judge him when he's had a proper run in the team.
And that’s the key to any player. You can only truly judge over a period of time. Poor old Glen Keeley is ranked as one of our worst players ever yet only played 30 minutes.
A run in the team is massively important - and so is actually playing to his strengths. He was never going to thrive in the "boot it forward to his head, but with nobody around him even if he wins the header" approach of the previous manager.
Is it his strengths or is that how we should be playing football in the first place. Proper football, like all the successful teams do 🤔 It feels we have been institutionalised into the way Dyche set us up and that many believe we have had to change because of Beto, as a negative towards the player
Exactly this. Our last manager didn’t play to either forwards strengths. No crosses for Dom (hoofs up the pitch dont count) or through balls for Beto. A lot of our chances are coming centrally for the first time in years which is so refreshing to see!
Being able to adapt your style of play to best suit the players available, and give you the best chance of winning, is always a good thing - and something we didn't manage to do (or arguably even try to do) under Dyche.
I think he always deserved more minutes to prove himself but it’s also fair to row back and have a change of mind. Before the recent run his performances made him look raw & clumsy with poor decision making. A causer of chaos more than a polished footballer.
I think it’s fair to attempt to judge him on what you see, however what you don’t see is the manager’s instructions to Beto and his teammates which set him up to fail. He was asked to be DCL and it’s just not his game.
His first goal for us is his game … yet Dyche refused to play to his strengths
It's not DCL's game either, he didn't score in 17 games. Not sure you can make a judgement on a player that spent most of his time on the bench, then coming on chasing the game.
No it’s not fair to judge, but natural to try to do so.
Good on you for the patient approach. There was a very real danger we’d never have seen him
play for us again in January, now he’s one of Feb’s players of the month!
Or as likely someone with a very limited understanding of pro football! We used to pride ourselves on having very few of this ilk but they are knocking about & can often be the loudest voice. See also politics!
I don't think he's far better, but he's defo a better striker. Bent played half the season on the wing and half as a lone striker, and his workrate was phenomenal. Limited ability at times, but just ran his heart out.
It’d be nice to go back to the old days where the only idiots you had to listen to were those actually at the match at least then you only had to listen to them at the match, social media isn’t made for many Everton supporters, particularly those who talk through their arse of which there are many
He has one bad game of missed chances and all of a sudden the naysayers are regurgitating the Denis Straqualursi and Marcus Bent comparisons 🙄
Those two scored a total of 8 goals combined. Beto's already scored 9, 5 in the last 5 games alone! He's only just been unleashed, there's more coming..
Worries me about our fan base for building the squad next season. How many PL players that everyone is raving about now were nothing special in their first season or two at other clubs? Likes of Kluivert, Robinson, Flekken, Elanga….
Fortunately none of these 'experts' have any influence whatsoever over who we sign. It's an exciting time but a lot of fans have been beaten down over the past ten years. I get it, but onwards and upwards.
He might not have been prolific but his work rate, willingness to run wide and do a lot of solo work up front was essential to us getting 4th. Using his name as a pejorative is ridiculous
Absolutely. There’s a generation of ‘EFC fans’ who think it’s fashionable to slag off our players. We’ve always had a degree of self-deprecation (often as a defence mechanism because of LFC success) but people take it too far because they think it’s fashionable to be outrageous & slag players off.
I'm often a bit guilty of being a contrarian, but just to make people consider alternatives. And I'm not a massive platform doing it for numbers to advertise to. Sensationalism and outrage annoy me
Moyes maximises talent. The fact that Beto still put himself in a position to score 3 times, he never hid he kept doing his job that’s all Moyes asks but he puts belief into players as well! He seems a good guy who has a future. The best outcome would be move DCL on and bring in a proven PL scorer.
It was unfortunate after his recent run that he had 3 almost identical chances that he's been scoring, the keeper did well but maybe he should have scored one, he's playing well, the team using him to his strengths, running through. Hopefully he kicks on again, always works hard though
Fair bit of let’s call it “stereotyping” amidst the analysis of certain (!) players. We mainly & certainly compared to most PL peers have what used to be called a knowledgeable fan base but the rush to give an opinion these days doesn’t help matters. All these players have strengths, play to them!
Moyes is showing more flexibility in playing to strengths which is great to see.
Can’t understand why Dyche didn’t consider playing differently when he saw Beto in training each day & Dom was struggling/ineffective…. Instead he tried to just drop Beto in Dom’s exact role with limited minutes.
Dyche was operating to the limit of his capabilities as a Manager & as a human. We’ll leave out any suggestion he’s a Kopite terrorist for now 😀 So on that basis the fault is on us for firstly hiring someone so manifestly unfit for the role then the arguably bigger mistake of retaining him so long!
The bent shout here is harsh. Don’t forget he spearheaded the 200/5 team and it finished fourth. Comparing Beto to bent in the current situation isn’t all that bad. Moyes plays to both of their strengths to maximise output.
I get that and a lot of people have said the same as you. I'm not trying to take anything away from how amazing Bent was for us but Beto is a much better player. Even at the time there was acknowledgement of Bent's contribution but not many disagreed we needed an upgrade.
Not aimed at you. Just the ‘perception’ that being like bent is an entirely bad thing. There’s no argument that Moyes isn’t using him right. It’s just some fans can’t help themselves. For years players are written off if they don’t hit the ground running. 1st bad game in a good run and it’s the same
He has exceptional strength when shrugging of challenges and once he gets into his stride he is deceptively fast at covering the ground. It would be a good bet that he is the quickest over 100 metres at the club. Strength and pace made those chances. They were his to miss.
The implication from this (not from you) is that Marcus Bent was a poor player. He was a journeyman, true, but for one brief period in his career, he was excellent, as a lone striker for us. I think the Straq (like Niasse) comparison is fair in that Beto is unconventional and looks awkward.
Beto has shown, given a run of games, that there is more to him if played to his strengths and given confidence. But he has had moments of looking hopeless, as did Straq and Oumar. But there is much more to his game.
Yet another reason why i dont listen or watch any of these fan podcasts ( are they what are called influencers these days as i no idea what they are really) As for Beto ok no world beater but we arent but if we had 11 players who give there all & always compete like Beto we would be in top 8 by now
I have said for ages on here & on the cesspit place Ok we are never going to win every game but we can always give 100% & compete in every game Far too many players head used to drop easily never seen Beto do that he misses a chance he gets up fights for another one & gives 100% every game
Listened to that pod and totally disagree with the person who made the statements. "Mimetic Desire" toward our city rivals means they'll destroy any of our players who are not "elite". That is not support or realistic in our current context. Trust we will improve quality, support the lads we have.
I'll name the podcast - it's the Royal Blue from the Red Echo. (Need I say more) Gang of clueless self-absorbed cunts, all of them, especially Tony Scott, who just likes to hear his own voice.
To be fair, Ian Croll was the one defending Beto, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Podcasts are the latest version of megaphones, some are full of self importance and bias and are blared to a sometimes unwitting audience as they push clickbait. When you learn which are unworthy of attention your life has so much less noise.
Who in their right mind expected these lads to be world beaters, they all gave everything while playing in the blue shirt. It’s all we can ask, we as fans should be getting behind them. We’ve see what a bit of confidence does to players.
Many also said Lukaku was shite, beyond any reasoning.
I think a lot of it is people don't want to be seen as 'wrong'. They made their mind up about Beto under Dyche and just won't admit he's better than they thought. In reality you're allowed to change your mind when you're presented with new evidence.

(Nor, to be fair, was DCL 🤷🏻♂️)
But also, different players have different strengths.
You want the best goalscoring return from DCL? Good crosses.
You want the same from Beto? Through-balls to run onto.

I always thought he would come good

We have done very well to survive this absolutely insane experiment & that’s AFTER Lampard & Benitez!!!
We deserve the world 😀 #UTFT 💙
