By the time I finished residency, I was so good at lumbar punctures. Squeezing down on a crying infants head and pushing them into a ball and then slipping in the spinal needle. On a typical admission night I might do 2 or 3. All gone now. I haven’t done one in years. They want to bring this back.

It was in 1992 and it was terrifying for me, let alone the child and parents. Standing quietly in a rural hospital watching a critically ill baby and waiting for air retrieval.
Vaccination for Hib started in 1993. Not seen a case since.
