People recommending we should read histories of the rise of Nazism…what did you guys study in school? In Nova Scotia, we spent the bulk of high school studying the World Wars. We sat through the entirety of ‘The World at War’ (not in 1 go!) It was another planet, but apparently not. - ThreadSky

My grandparents came to America to escape the Nazis. Grandma would never believe this. She would be clicking her tongue and calling people "Arschlecker".

I think that in the 50s & 60s information about the true horror was still emerging. Our fathers rarely talked about their wartime experiences and people wanted to focus on a better future. However, my son is implementing a course at his university, so it is being taught.

history classes, especially pre-college, in my personal experience, are frequently less about critical thinking and learning from the past and more about memorization of facts. it gives a false impression of knowledge, which is worse than no impression at all.
